Many Reasons for Homelessness

There is no single reason why people end up on the street.
Here are a few of the root reasons of homelessness.

The Foster System

As was apparent in Carl's story, the Canadian foster system is failing the children it is sworn to protect. Almost 50% of homeless people have at one point been in the foster system, and many of them are moved multiple times in their childhood. These children often feel neglected and unloved, impacting them for life.
.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction

There are very few homeless people that are completely clean and sober. Most are addicted to one or a variety of substances ranging from nicotine, to alcohol, to cocaine to heroin. Addicts eventually become completely dependant on a substance fix and spend all of their money and time feeding this dependency. In this lifestyle of constant substance use, there is absolutely no budget for shelter Nereid food or proper clothing.

Sexual, Physical, and Psychological Abuse

There are very few homeless people and teens in particular that left a happy home. Nearly 70% of the homeless suffered some type of abuse while living with parents or guardians. The memories of household abuse lasts a lifetime and is a major factor leading to someone becoming homeless.
